The building was made when immigration flourished in America. It was seen as a gateway for immigrants into america. The island is 27.5 acres. It is often tied to the statue of liberty, as both are iconic for the idea of immigration.
An interesting unknown fact about Ellis island is that 40% of all US citizens can trace one of their ancestors to the monument. Some famous people who have entered America through Ellis Island are body builder Charles Atlas, Charlie Chaplin, composer Irving Berlin, and Sigmund Freud.
