The Plaza

The Plaza Hotel, located on Fifth Avenue, finally opened its doors on October 1st of 1907 after two years of construction. Designed by Henry Janeway, the luxurious hotel has built its name over the years. When the area was first purchased, building was a fifteen story building, which in that time was thought of as a skyscraper. The hotel was the dream of four bright men: Bernhard Beinecke who was a financier, Fred Sterry, a hotelier, and the president of Fuller Construction program Harry S. Black.

Today the Plaza hotel is a 19 story building and has a prominent shape for itself. Over the years it has been featured in multile films such as the Great Gatsby. F. Eloise at the Plaza was how the hotel gained its true fame. This spunky little girl's story was the face of mischief that ran around the plaza's hallway and in memory of this oh so famous book, a suite was con structed in her honor as well, with the famous pink walls and the pastel sheet, parties in this suite are available as well to the public to gain the Eloise experience.

Ellis Island

Although most of us picture a renaissance revival styled building when we picture Ellis Island, the historical landmark is the whole island. The building was built in 1900, designed by architects Edward Lippincott Tilton and William Alciphron Boring.

The building was made when immigration flourished in America. It was seen as a gateway for immigrants into america. The island is 27.5 acres. It is often tied to the statue of liberty,  as both are iconic for the idea of immigration.

An interesting unknown fact  about Ellis island is that 40% of all US citizens can trace one of their ancestors to the monument. Some famous people who have entered America through Ellis Island are body builder Charles Atlas, Charlie Chaplin, composer Irving Berlin, and Sigmund Freud.

Statue of Liberty

Lady Liberty is our nation's symbol of freedom. Starting in September 1875 and ending in October, 1886, The Statue of Liberty was meant to be a gift in honor of our one hundred years as a free nation. Designed by artist Frederic Bartholdi, the statue is a work of enormous size, 305 feet, and beauty. Not only is it a symbol of freedom and peace, but of our long alliance with France, which gave us the statue.

The Statue also stood for the American Dream, as immigrants came to America and were first greeted by the statue. An interesting facet of the statue is the Declaration of Independence which she is holding. Another interesting fact is that the statue used to be copper but has changed colors due to air pollution.

A famous person connected to the Statue is newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer, for fundraising money to finish the pedestal on which Lady Liberty stands.

It had a moderate construction time of roughly two years, September 1928 to May 1930. The Chrysler Building was meant to be the tallest structure in the world, surpassing the Eiffel Tower.

Designed by architect William Van Alen, it has a height of 1,046 ft with the spire (925 ft without) and a total of 77 floors. Famous LIFE magazine photographer Margaret Bourke-White is known to have lived on the 61st floor.

An interesting feature is its Art Deco facade, seen below. The building has some architectural points modeled after the car, Chrysler, most notably, the gargoyles which were inspired by a car hood ornament.
